When you think industrial age or steam punk designs, the first thing that comes to your mind are lots of steel joined by nuts, bolts and screws. So here’s a quick guide to these little unsung heroes called fasteners. In the modern world too, these fasteners are used at an industrial as well as personal level, right from factory machines to architectural structures to even furniture.

Let’s first start with defining fasteners. They are basically hardware device that mechanically join or affix two or more objects together. These joints are generally temporary, that is, the joints can be removed or dismantled whenever desired without damaging the joint objects.

Next, we now move on to identifying its type. They can be broadly classified into two categories, namely threaded and unthreaded. We will primarily focus on threaded type here. It is one of the most widely used fasteners of all and they can be subcategorized into the following groups:

Screw

Technically a screw can be defined as an inclined plane wrapped around a nail. It is primarily used as to assemble objects and position them. A screw usually has a head on one end that contains a specially formed shape that allows it to be turned, or driven, with a tool like a wrench or a screwdriver. The head is larger than the body of the screw in most cases. This keeps the screw from being driven deeper than the length of the screw and also provides a bearing surface.

Nut and bolt

It is a combination of a threaded hole (called the ‘nut’) used in conjunction with a threaded male partner (called ‘bolt’). The bolt here is commonly mistaken for screw due to similar appearance but they both serve different purposes. This combination of fastener is used to assemble two non-threaded components with a nut. The bolted joints thus created are a combination of the nut applying an axial clamping force and also the shank of the bolt acting as a dowel, pinning the joint against sideways forces. This is the reason why many bolts have a plain unthreaded shank (called the grip length) because it acts as a better and a stronger dowel.

Threaded inserts

Threaded inserts are more commonly called as threaded bushing. They are a member of the fastener family that can be inserted into an object to add a threaded hole. They can be used for huge variety of purposes, some of which are, repairing a worn out threaded hole or, providing a more durable threaded hole in a soft object, to place a thread onto material that is too thin to accept it.

There are a variety of online industrial supplies store where you can get these at best price.
