Many of us use apps like Siri Assistant, Bing, Google Mobile apps etc. to make a call, set a reminder or alarm, to navigate, to search something on the internet and so on. These apps save us our typing time by recognizing our words and performing the actions accordingly. These apps use what is called speech recognition technology to recognize our verbal commands so that it can perform the required action. Speech recognition technology or SRT is a computer technology or software that identifies the words spoken by a person using pre-registered sentences, grammar, words etc. In other words, you can say that SRT is a technology which converts our verbal commands into texts or software that helps our computer or mobile to understand the same to perform a specific task. There are two basic types of SRT

1.    Front – End speech recognition technology - in front end SRT, you can dictate into your device (mobile phone, computer mike etc.) and your verbal commands would be converted into texts on screen. In this type of SRT, you can immediately correct the mistakes made by the software, and hence the need for a transcriptionist is eliminated.

2.    Back-End speech recognition technology - in Back-End the SRT, speech/dictations are recorded in a digital voice recorder, mobile phone etc.  The voice file is then run through a computer with speech recognition technology and converted into text format. A transcriptionist would then proofread this drafted document while listening to the original audio file simultaneously. This is done to correct the machine made errors as it cannot accurately transcribe human speech

Difference between speech recognition technology and voice recognition technology

Many people confuse the term speech recognition with voice recognition or consider the terms as synonyms. Speech recognition is entirely different from voice recognition. Speech recognition technology recognizes words or WHAT is being said while voice recognition technology recognizes a person’s voice or WHO is talking (and not WHAT is being said). For example, you can take a mobile phone which is locked and unlocked using voice. When the owner of the phone speaks into it, the device identifies his/her voice (voice print) by using voice biometric identity verification technology. It will not unlock to a different person’s voice.  Speech recognition technology, on the other hand responds to any voice as it is programmed only to recognize a person’s words and not his/her voice.

Uses of SRT

With the invention of speech recognition technology life has become much easier. Below listed are some uses of this technology

●     SRT in cars helps the driver to make phone calls, navigate, listen to music, and turn on the radio station etc. just by speaking into it.

●     Disabled persons like the blind, people who had lost their arms etc. are benefited to a great deal by the SRT. They can easily make a call or text a friend (in the case of people who had lost their arms), open files and folders in their PC, phone etc using this technology.

●     Many companies have employed SRT in their telephones to guide their customers. There is no more pain of pressing the buttons each time a recorded voice asks you to do so. Instead, you just have to reply with specific words (which are of course instructed by the voice) and that’s it.

●      SRT enables persons with speech defects to save their speech after every session, thus enabling a free flow of dictation.

●     Front – End SRT and Back-End SRT  are widely used in medical documentation processes.

SRT Transcription

SRT transcription is the process of running an audio file through a computer with a powerful speech recognition technology and drafting it out in text formats. No matter how advanced is the technology, its vocabulary is always limited and hence a  transcriptionist always has to proofread the draft to eliminate all the machine made errors.
