What is the role of a Communication Designer?

Communication designers principally create visual messages. These experts operate on various computer programs to artistically design products for businesses or companies. These creations could be used online on websites, Mobile Applications or print materials. Communication designers could team up with web designers or animators to aid in the delivery of those original designs. Communications designers may have varying roles, including graphic designer or creative director.

What does employment look like for a Communications Designer?

Many Communication Designers find jobs with titles - graphic artist, creative director, and game developer; Exhibition Designer et al. Many industries scout out for such talent like media, public relations, communications, education, and business.

Day to day job roles may include designing a website for a merchandiser, creating advertising for a small business, putting together a layout for a magazine cover or developing a video game. Creativity, software knowledge and familiarity with multimedia are imperative in this field.

What Education does one need?

An undergraduate or Post graduate in communications design or graphic design is the essential by most employers. In a communication design program, topics covered may include 3-D design, art history, Flash programming, digital media, website design etc. Courses may include typography, computer applications, interaction design and graphic design.

Employers definitely favor candidates who have experience working with multimedia technology, understand communication design terminology, know the basic principles of marketing and have a developed professional portfolio.  Keep in mind the portfolio needs to show the diversity of your work and range of your abilities. To build a portfolio, you may use projects completed while you were in school, work done through an internship or projects completed through a design competition.

How bright does the future prospect look like?

A Communication Designer can foray into Graphic Designing of Interaction Designing.  While a Graphic Designer can choose to dwell on Type Design, Print & Digital Media, Illustration, Visual Branding and Advertising, Film, Photography, Motion Graphics, Infographics, Interaction Designer on the other hand is more about Web/App Design, Digital Video, User Interface & User Experience Design, Service Design, Game Design, Physical Computing, and Interactive Environments.
