The refrigerator is a household necessity that is temperamental at times. Issues can vary from petty annoyances like no ice to the dreaded complete system failure. A responsible homeowner will take the proactive step in the familiarization of the parts that can fail. The refrigerator and freezer units are closed air systems that chill their respective confined space. A refrigerant is a gas that can turn into a high pressure liquid within the confines of the tubing present in the machine. The change of states and pressures cause the exchange of heat which results in cooling the confined spaces.
A compressor motor causes the movement of the gas and liquid through the coils. A thermocouple which monitors the current temperature is responsible for determining when the compressor comes on and turns off. Simple and straight forward in theory that can be complicated to troubleshoot and repair.

If the circuit breaker has not tripped, the next place to look would be the compressor motor. A motor usually has protection in the form of a fuse or thermal overload. This protects equipment and people from catastrophe from a motor that is allowed to run in an overheated state.
A unit that is not cooling properly can also be examined. The problem may lie in a faulty thermocouple which is not telling the compressor when to turn on properly. A leak may exist in the tubing which results in a loss of efficiency. An array of other reasons may also exist that would hinder efficiency.
