Smartphones and tablets have made a huge difference in the way we live our day-to-day lives. But, did you know that your mobile devices can also benefit you in the dental world? There are tons of applications (or "apps") out there to help you and your patients.
Here are some of the most helpful apps for dental professionals!
Epocrates Rx from Epocrates is a free app that gives dentists and endodontists access to a large clinical reference library. Users have access to things like a robust drug guide (complete with a drug interaction checker) and formulary information.
The app also comes in an upgraded version (Epocrates Essentials) for a yearly fee of This version includes additional information on diagnostic info and tests, insurance codes, and alternative medicines.
But regardless of which version you choose, users get free app updates and medical news. Epocrates Rx is available from the Epocrates website for iOS, Android, and Blackberry.
DDS GP is an award-winning app from a company called Kick Your Apps and is designed to help you deliver information and diagnoses to patients. The app comes with a library of over 200 presentations covering topics from tooth decay and cracks to gum disease.
One of the app's greatest features is how you can customize the experience for individual patients. The app allows you to upload your own images and then mark on them by drawing with your finger, so you can point out specific parts to patients or colleagues. You can also share your consultations with patients by printing out plans or sending them over email.
iRomexis comes from Planmeca and serves as a handy way of examining and sharing both 2D and 3D images from Planmeca X-Ray systems. The iRomexis app makes it easy to view images for patient consultations and collaboration with other Dentee IOS app professionals.
The app works in conjunction with the Planmeca Romexis desktop software and gives immediate access to rich, detailed images to help you with your patients. If your practice already uses Planmeca products, you should check out the app!

Lexi-Dental Complete, from Lexicomp, offers subscription-based access to a robust collection of databases for dental information so that you can make diagnoses quicker and figure out treatment methods more easily. The app includes over 1,000 color photographs and over 5,000 color images, while the databases give you access to information on drug/herb/food interactions, oral hard and soft tissue diseases, an endodontic handbook, and much more.
One caveat, however: each subscription works on one device only, so buyers should note that before purchasing. However, subscribers do get access to any new databases introduced during their subscription.
Dental Care HD is an iOS app from Egate IT Solutions. This one is more for patients, especially those with kids. The app has a fun design and is intended to introduce people to basic tips and tricks on brushing, flossing, and overall dental health and hygiene.
Besides the basics, this app touches on topics like tooth whitening products and nutrition for good oral health. The app's layout and presentation are set up so that it works for all ages.

BoneBox™ Skull Viewer is a good anatomy iOS app that reviews the skull. It is compatible with the new iPad and the iPad 2. Unfortunately this app is not compatible with the first generation iPad due to extremely high resolution models and textures.
