Our aging loved ones may be at a point in their lives when they need companionship and help with everyday routines. They can often feel isolated and depressed without interaction with others. Our loved ones likely look forward to visits with family members with whom they find comfort and a closer connection, other than just daily interaction with live-in caregivers. This helps keep their minds sharp and their bodies a little more active.

Regularly visiting our aging loved ones will benefit them on many levels. It is suggested that you plan your visit by calling ahead. Many older adults take pride in looking their best when visitors are coming.

1. Frequent visits enable our loved ones to express emotions.

Visits from loved ones can evoke happiness, love, feelings of safety, and even anger. While visiting your loved one, allow him or her to vent about anything. Being able to express fear and anger can reduce stress. Most elderly people are afraid to express their disappointments in their living situations for fear of being neglected by staff in retribution. Listen with empathy to any complaints, as this is a good opportunity for you to assess the care that is being given.

2. Bringing necessities during regular visits will make daily routines easier.

Bringing items to your loved one that are not easy to obtain is another great reason to visit often. With reduced mobility and limited transportation, our elders may not be able to get the basics they need. Honor him by calling ahead to ask if there is anything specifically he needs, even if it is just toothpaste. This simple act can instill confidence that daily needs are being met.

3. Sharing a comforting meal during each visit can evoke memories and break a routine.

Find out what your loved one has been craving and take a nice meal or snacks to share together. If he or she is mobile enough, take her out to lunch at a favorite spot. Skip the facility dining room and go for a memorable experience.

4. Encouraging visits with younger people can be very mentally and physically stimulating.

Having your loved one interact with children and teenagers often is good therapy. Always ask first to be sure he is up for the activity level. Grandparents especially love to engage in conversation with their grandchildren. They can tell memorable stories to them, and they can learn about the exciting new things that the children are doing in school and for fun.

5. Visit before holidays to help create a festive environment.

A wonderful reason to visit your aging loved one is to decorate her living space for the holidays - any holiday. Bring a few decorations and maybe some cards made by children. Decorations will often bring more social interaction from others around her. Just one compliment from another resident or a staff member is likely to bring a smile to her face.

6. Making dedicated visits to go over health concerns, medications, finances, and grooming needs will encourage your loved one to be an active participant in his or her care.

Plan certain visits to help your loved one with simple tasks, like washing his or her  hair, to help him/her feel better about his physical appearance. Review medications to make sure they are being taken as prescribed. Ask about any new aches and pains. Go over finances so that he knows he is actively participating in his care, if appropriate. Offer to speak with a doctor or aid on his behalf if physical or mental conditions have changed or declined.

If you are unable to visit your aging loved one regularly, due to distance or work obligations, call them often and write to them. They want to feel visible and not forgotten
